Habitat:
Carex inopinata was found growing as loose mats along the crest of a riparian scarp in moderate shade under the margin of modified-primary podocarp-hardwood forest directly alongside the Waimakariri River. Substrate: Mapped as Kowai recent soil, though possibly more drought-prone due to a nearby north-facing scarp. The site receives fresh wind-blown gritty material from the adjacent Waimakariri River bed on a regular basis.
Microhabitat:
The canopy is dominated by Lophomyrtus obcordata, Kunzea ericoides, Melicytus ramiflorus, Pittosporum tenuifolium, Pseudopanax arboreus, with occasional emergent Prumnopitys taxifolia and Nothofagus solandri var. solandri. The understorey is dominanated byCoprosma crassifolia and Leptecophylla juniperina subsp. juniperina. The groundcover is dominated by Pyrrosia eleagnifolia with occasional Libertia ixioides, Arthropodium candidum, plus a few larger sedges and Uncinia species.
Notes:
Population Size: Seven specimens of Carex inopinata were found, each being a sprawling loose mat of about 50 cm x 30 cm up to 100 cm x 150 cm. Whilst the seven plants themselves appeared healthy, only four flowers were found, indicating that (in 2011 at least) the population is a shy seed producer. Site protection: Physically protected from livestock by fencing and proposed to be legally protected by way of a QEII covenant.
