Altitudes:

Habitat:
Substrate: Mapped as Weld steepland yellow-grey earth, though variable and probably more drought-prone due to localised greywacke rock outcropping on a ridge top site. Growing as a loose mat under mature shrubs in moderate shade, on a sun and wind exposed ridge crest (the other five plants seen occurred under twiggy shrubs on ridge crests and on north-facing hillslopes).
Notes:
Population Size: Six scattered specimens of Carex inopinata were found within about a 0.5 km radius, each being a sprawling loose mat of about 30 cm x 30 cm up to 50 cm x 80 cm (or possibly more). Site protection: Four of the six plants recorded are in an area physically protected from farm livestock by fencing and legally protected by way of a 15.08 ha QEII covenant, the other two are a short distance outside the covenant. The general area is periodically vulnerable to rabbit plagues (routinely controlled by poisoning). The collected wild plant did not have flowers or seed heads apparent when first found (hence a specimen was grown on in cultivation), however 3 flowering heads were seen during a re-visit to the site on 11/11/2011.
