The plant looked rather like Senecio glaucophyllus but with capitula more like vulgaris. Possibly glaucophyllus × vulgaris.

Roadside bank between sealed road and edge of fringing kānuka.
Notes:
Bushy clump c. 35-40 cm high of ± erect stems. Capitula discoid, rayless with black-tipped involucral bracts. One plant only seen. Orange rust pustules on leaves.
