Preferred name:
Macromitrium longirostre (Hook.) Schwägr.
Active:
no
Identification type:
Determination
Note:
morphologically intermediate between Vitt's concepts of M. longirostre and M. ramsayae Although the inner basal cells here seem consistently rounded-subquadrate to elliptic and the upper laminal cells seem entirely unistratose (except at extreme apex). Other feautres, including leaf shape and overall habit are suggestive of M. longirostre. Males present; Perigonia terminal on branches of well-developed plants, bulbiform, c. 0.8 mm diam. I consider this specimen to illustrate the lack of clear distinction between M. longirostre and M. ramsayae on the Chathams.
