Substrate: Greywacke outcrops (limestone outcrops occur c. 1 km away). Carex inopinata was found growing as loose mats in moderate shade under scrub and shrublands dominated by Sophora prostata and Coprosma crassifolia on dry exposed greywacke rock spurs. The ground surface under these canopy species is largely bare except for Asplenium flabellifolium and Einadia allanii. Vegetation between these groups of individuals of Sophora prostrata and Coprosma crassifolia is dominated by occasional emergent native shrubs over exotic grasses.
Notes:
Site protection: Physically protected from livestock by fencing and legally protected by way of an 8.7 ha QEII covenant.
Two specimens of Carex inopinata were found, each being a sprawling loose mat of about 70 cm diameter. The site was not closely checked, and further specimens could well occur both at the known location and on similar sites nearby.
