Notes:
Small trees c. 3 m high. Shoots ± puberulous. Leaves ± bullate with impressed veins above. Male catkins ± pendent, variable in number at a node as well as diam., some being fat and appearing like female catkins of the related genus Ostrya. Fruits with the nuts enveloped loosely by 2 multi-lobed bracts united proximally, these up to nearly 2 x length of nut. Nuts shining brown, tending flattened laterally. Specimens of nut probably include those on neighbouring trees.
