Habitat:
Exposed ridge top.
Notes:
Stunted young tree c. 1 m high but has been 2 m or more high. Trunk fairly stout; bark dark grey, fissured. Foliage in clusters distally on stout shoots, ± directed forwards. Buds chestnuts, resinous. Closed cones ovoid, symmetrical; umbo prickly; apophyses ± shining medium brown; scales soon opening. Isolated tree in low scrub. Species cult. in main Hanmer forest area below.
