Rampant vine climbing to nearly 3 m, very frost sensitive and thus dying down to ground level in winter. Tubers white with horizontal grooves; appearance and taste much like oca (Oxalistuberosa). Flowers appearing in April; pedicels often > petioles and thus flowers held beyond foliage. Flowers ± declined or horizontal, 3-3.5 cm including calyx spur, deep orange. Petals 1.2-1.4 x c. 1 cm, broad obovate with tapered base, with dark purple markings inside originating from a basal point. Filaments pink, < petals. Does not fruit.
