Abundant understorey shrub or tree up to 10 m tall. Stems dark maroon, leaves generally rater large with the bases overlapping like they do in the Hauraki Gulf and on Tuhua (Mayor Island). Kawakawa (Piper excelsum subsp. excelsum) is an important understory component of the forest on Rangatira. Occassionally it reaches the canopy.
