Notes:
Ex. Cult. Specimen raised from seed collected from a plant growing amongst Machaerina junca in open seepage above main streambed in October 1990. Seedlings raised from that plant were cultivated first at Percy Reserve, Petone Wellington and then at Oratia Native Plant Nursery. Growth habit sprawling, branches widely spreading, never erect, though sometimes weakly ascending. In all other respects identical to the usual upright shrub form of H. diversifolius seen in northern New Zealand. A careful survey of Ngawhenua Stream during 15 November 2010 failed to find any plants and based on other surveys between 2009 and 2011 it seems that this race of Hibiscus may now be extinct at North Cape. According to Tony (A.P.) Druce it was first recorded from there by Ross Michie in the 1950s.
