This is a putative hybrid between Gaultheria antipoda and Gaultheria rupestris. Gaultheria rupestris was not seen in the area however. Plant 1 m high, very robust shrub with many fruits. Shortened racemes. Fruits clustered at terminal ends of branchlets. Fruits are predominantly dry capsules with a fleshy red surrounding calyx. Some fruits appear to lack the fleshy calyx.
