Notes:
Erect succulent-stemmed herb to 60 or 70 cm high. Leaf sheaths purple-dotted; lamina shining, almost uniformly dark green above except for slightly lighter green midrib band; leaves not distichous. Inflor. erect; rachis dark shining purple; bracts of same colour. Perianth (outer whorl) c. 10 mm long; outside bright purple; segments broad ovate, deeply concave and almost naviculate; perianth (inner whorl 1.3-1.4 x c. 1.5 cm, very broad obovate; basal area white, remainder bright velvety-purple. Stamens 7-8 mm long; anthers < filaments. Style > stamens, pale mauve. Cultivated as this species.
