Habit: Tufted or tussock grass with closely packed light green, erect, fine leaves - soft to touch. Sheaths straw coloured. Flower culms to 30 ± cm. 3-4 leaves/nodes (swollen, dark brown). Culm leaves up to 7 cm. Others longer. Culm leaves V-shaped - rounded, fine prickles towards base on outside auricles - ? swollen areas. Culms - channelled dark green and light green, some very fine prickles on ridges. Branchlets very prickly - sinuous when young. Florets 3-6 compressed flowers, reddish-green. Glumes uneven. Lemmas prickly on margins and veins - no awn. Anthers .5-.6 mm, 3 green young, purple mature. Stigmas 2 - ovary already swollen. (Clearly selfing). Palea prickles on margins - bifurcate at tips.
