Habitat:
Growing as a single plant near a south-facing forest margin, in moderate shade, under secondary hardwood forest
Notes:
In fruit. It appeared to have volunteered in a disturbed location (previously very accessible to livestock) which (due to subsequent fencing and de-stocking) would soon become highly shaded by regenerating native trees and shrubs.Population size: One lone specimen, with a rooted base of about 25 cm diameter and a sprawling top with leaves to 0.5 m long and seed-bearing culms up to 1.7 m long.Substrate: Stony alluvial outwash, former flood channels of river.Site Protection: Protected by fencing from cattle (since 2009) legally protected by a QEII convenant.Associated species: The discontinous overhead canopy is dominated by Melicytus ramiflorus, Myoporum laetum and Pennantia corymbosa with occasional emergent Prumnopitys taxifolia nearby. The understorey is dominated by regenerating (juvenile) Pennantia corymbosa, and the ground cover by Hypolepis ambigua. Metrosideros diffusa is locally common on trunks and over some fallen debris. The overhead canopy is broken by previous mass-disturbance (prior to site protection) and by recent wind damage.

Hypolepis ambigua
Prumnopitys taxifolia
Pennantia corymbosa
Myoporum laetum
