This is the same taxon as the type material of Hypnum kirkii Müll.Hal. ex Beckett, collected by Kirk on the Snares. perigonia present; stem X section with a central core of prosenchymatous cells surrounded by several (c. 4) layers of incrassate & pigmented cells, lacking both a central strand & hyaloderm; leaves narrowly lanceolate with a slender acumen, homomallous (not falcate), 1.3-1.5 x 0.2-0.3 mm (under coverslip, but not fully flattened), homomallous median lamina cells vericular, firm-walled & porose, mostly 60-75 x 3-5 µm, c. 5-15:1
