This specimen epitomizes the difficulty I have applying the characters used by Ireland (1992) to distinguish two species of Plagiothecium in NZ.

Features in this plant suggesting P. novae-seelandiae (=P. lamprostachys) sensu Ireland: flagelliferous branches apparently lacking; leaves boradly acute, not "long-acuminate"; median laminal cells wide, mostly c. 15 µm; cells of deccurencies often remaining attached to stem when leaves are removed; if present on leaves the cells inflated and the decurrencies variable in width (from c. 60 to 90 µm wide
