Nelson Land District
Habitat:
Site: Broad, gently sloping 'ridges' within Millerton coal mine, fire area. This mine was abandoned after some coal seams caught fire. The original vegetation of pakihi scrub (Empodisma minus, Leptospermum scoparium) was burnt or scraped off and most of the soil eroded of the site. Substrate: 5 to 50 mm deep of weathered sandstone sand and silt on top of an essentially impermeable, level sandstone pavement that has some fissures (in which taller vegetation has survived in places). Vegetation association : Island of gorse 3-4 m high on elevated piles of rock, surrounded by 2-5 cm deep moss with clumps of Juncus squarossa 30*30 to 50*50 cm across, many clumps colonised by blue orchid. Moss is also found as the dominant ground-cover with 5-10% cover of Phormium tenax. Climate: 4-6 m rainfall p.a. Low light (lots of cloud/fog cover), snowfalls expected in winter, but snow does not lie on the ground. Very exposed — high wind run.
Notes:
Access: through contacting Solid Energy International : restricted entry due to dangerous gases from burning mine and fissures/unstable ground. Site saftey [sic] induction required before entry.
