Notes:
One of several plants growing in sand dune swales showing BOTH foliage states of Pimelea villosa subsp. villosa (small imbricating leaves) and subsp. arenaria (larger lax leaves) (sensu Burrows 2009, New Zealand Journal of Botany 47: 334-336). It is my view that Burrows' concept of his Pimelea villosa subspecies is completely flawed. His supsp. arenaria is mostly based on shade forms of P. villosa s.s., rather than any fixed (genetic) state of variation within P. villosa s.l. In this regard this collection is significant because the one gathering shows both foliage states of his subspecies on the one plant. This is admittedly as unusual as it is pleasing to find as one normally tends to find plants matching subsp. arenaria growing in shaded sites or amongst other dune plants in sand systems otherwise supporting typical P. villosa. Significantly neither of these foliage types matches the southern form of P. villosa (= Colenso's P. dasyantha) which Burrows has inadvertantly included in his concept of subsp. arenaria (for which he used the Cunningham type from Hokianga), and which has a completely different growth habit, as well as larger, patent leaves.

Supplementary remarks:
This plant is unquestionably P. villosa subsp. villosa. See Burrows, C.J. 2009, N.Z.J. Bot. 47: 334-336 for a full account of how subsp arenaria differs. P.J. de L. has never communicated with me on this matter except on this herbarium label. Strange!
