Flowers later than S. glaucophyllus s.s.; rhizomatous; rhizomes purple-pink; leaves strongly glaucous c.f. S. glaucophyllus s.s. which is only weakly or not glaucous. More robust than S. glaucophyllus s.s. Abaxial venation more reticulate than S. glaucophyllus s.s.
