Plant 16ft. tall: large leaves from base of inflorescence: stem naked with leaf scars below inflorescence. Young seedlings with black-based hairs. Flowers pink - jade blue to purplish. ±3 months period of flowering of each branch in inflorescence: calyces nearest infl. axis ripened and nutlets shed, flowers opening at ends of branches, with dead flowers and ripening calyces in intermediate portion of branches. Flowering material of the species recorded in "The Natural History of New Zealand - An Ecological Survey" ed. G.R. Williams. 1973.p.180. Original Riverton specimen (non-fl.) in BD. herbarium, together with stem sections. Aside from gathering from Riverton, this species has been collected from Bluff, Timaru and Ashley River, near Rangiora.
