Notes:
Herbarium JK Bartlett. Duplicate of AK 179758. Collected between 1975 and 1985. Sterile. (Rhizoidal initial cells difficult to see, but apparently present at apex of some leaves; abaxial rhizoids not seen. Stems slender, irregularly branched, to at least 20mm. Stem and branch leaves not differentiated, rather distant, spreading, not striolate (moist of dry), ovate-lanceolate, c. 1.5mm, entire, weakly apiculate and slightly reflexed at apex. Upper lamial cells linear-rhomboid, mostly c. 45-60 µm; some weakly inflated and suggestive of "rhizoid initials" (in some leaves); alar cells differentiated (transition to laminal cells not abrupt) forming a ± auriculate and decurrent group of inflated, hyaline cells which does not reach the costa; costa slender, extending 3/4 to 7/8 leaf length. I have not critically compared this to C. autrostramineum, but I do not see how this specimen differs from N. hemisphere material of C. pseudostramineum. Allan Fife, November 2000.) (Duplicate removed ex AK 179758 for CHR 12/2000. AJ Fife.) (This Bartlett collection from Ruby Lake, Nelson (AK 179758, CHR 537656), appears to be referrable to the genus Calliergidium. This material, apparently growing submerged, has more widely spaced leaves and narrower and firmer walled upper laminal cells than a Cape Foulwind collection (CHR 348341, WELT 7484) which has been referred to C. austo-stramineum. The laminal cells, in particular, suggest that the Lake Ruby material may be referrable to C. pseudostramineum. However, the Lake Ruby material has leaves which are more elliptic than northern hemisphere collections and lacks distinct clusters of inflated "rhizoid intiial" cells in the upper lamina. Ruby Lake is c. 4400ft (1340m) elev. Allan Fife, January 2001)
