Leaves are usually glaucous to some degree. Old leaves often strongly tinited red-brown extending from tips to almost the whole leaf in some cases. Females flower when spike is small and bracts appressed. Spike elongates and bracts spread at fruiting stage. Males flower when spike is full-sized. Males can flower on very small plants.
