Notes:
Adult tree present, but these pieces are off a 2 m slender seedling with dark glossy leaves (paler below); underbark yellow; very sharp spines on leaflet margins (and stipules?).

Supplementary remarks:
Mahonia duclouxiana which grows right beside M. japonica; it has some decumbent stems that do take root, but probably not much over a metre from where it was planted. M. duclouxiana is not adventive in this garden.
