Sap clear. Number of rosettes and spikes per plant: for females 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 5 (4 heads in this case); for males 1, 2, 7 (10 rosettes in this case). Looks very distinct from A. montana at Mt Cook in that the leaflets all point toward the leaf apex, the pulvinus is weak so that leaves are at 45° to the stem, the flower head is small. Largest plant seen growing on bank next to stream was male, with 16 heads. Habitat is mostly on shady hillslopes, rocky on the ridges, sunny faces or stream banks.
