Notes:
Perenial rootstock of Scirpus caldwellii.
This from Hokio, exposed by the scouring of floodwaters at the estuary.
This small leafy Scirpus is found in the brackish tidal reaches of esterines, at the margin of damp banks. It likes very damp places, though not right in the water.
It dies down in autumn & shoots up again in December. The roots are perennial, being tough & intertwinned. They help to protect the sandy edge of the estuary.
First seen in Horowhenua at Waikawa estuary (Manakau beach) in Jan 1964.
Not seen in the district e.g. Hokio till summer 1967, but now widespread beside all local estuaries.
