Habitat:
Single volunteer plant in flower garden, with several seedlings of Echium wildpretii.
Notes:
Plants of Echium pininana have been grown here for many years, and have seeded and reproduced freely, such that the species is literally a weed on the section. Plants of Echium wildpretii have also been grown here for many years, the last occasion on which they seeded here was in 1991. The seed of Echium wildpretii appears to have some factor inhibiting germination, and after each seeding the species did not reappear for 5 - 7 years, and then only a handful of plants appeared - this in marked contrast to the behaviour of Echium pininana which seeded freely and germinated rapidly. This behaviour of the 1991 seeds continues to that observed down the years. Leaves from above bare base of stem. Sheets A and B.
