Habitat:
On crest of large alluvial terrace in depleted, oversown silver tussock grassland with scattered Discaria toumatou. Hieracium pilosella abundant.
Forming mosaic of several square metres with Racomtrium pruinosum on dry gravel soil (the two always quite distinct); with Cyathodes fraseri, Hieracium pilosella, Agrostis stolonifera as vascular dominants and with scattered Wahlenbergia albomarginata.Duplicates sent to five colleagues/herbaria as R. squarrosum in April 1997.
