Large pachymorph bamboo forming dense clumps c.10m high; habit ± fastigiate because of shortness of laterals. Culm sheaths dark brown and hispid when young, green; sheath lamina brownish-green; auricles very small. Cultivated as this species. Branches originally few from the nodes, always one much larger, later on more subsidiary ones arising from near the base. Leaves dark green; oral bristles and auricles present; latter rudimentary. Inflorescence very few, arising from near base. Spikelets mostly 3-4cm long; glumes appearing plaited, shining purple or greenish-purple.
