Habitat:
Metrosideros forest, shrub understorey absent.
Notes:
Large rhizomatous herb; rhizomes very thick, not collected. Leaves to c.2m high, often held ± erect, shining beneath, midrib and main veins pale,and raised on both sides; petiole with erect sheath. Inflorescence stem and inflorescence erect, to c.1.5m. Inflorenscence fragrant. Spathe ± elliptic or lanceolate elliptic, pale green and concave at first, becoming pale yellow and eventually reflexing; expanded part 15 to nearly 30 cm x 4-8.5 cm. Spadix 14-25 cm long; male and female part separated by short sterile portion; male part 4- 8 cm long; sterile terminal portion 6-9 cm long, tapering towards the obtuse or subacute apex, finely segmented. Young fruit rounded and slightly flattened, glossy. Abundant and forming a dense stand through which little else can grow.
