Herb with simple, ± erect fleshy stems, often pink or red towards the top. Leaves membranous; petioles often with dark red glands. Pedicels recurving after flowering, ± red, according to the colour form. Calyx 13-14 mm long, mauve-pink. Corolla c. 3 cm long, deep rose or crimson (other colours present but these were by far the commonest), irregular. Petals c. 3 x 2.2 cm, bilobed, broadly obovate; the short claw paler; lower "petal" smaller than the others, c. 15 mm long including short green spur. Fruits pale green. Seeds freely produced and some plants probably were spontaneous.
