Notes:
Giant soboliferous herb with stout pseudostem c. 2.5 m high. Leaves in terminal crown, soon curving downwards and becoming tattered at margins, to 170 cm long, scarcely shining green above, somewhat glaucescent beneath. Inflorescence on a long pendulous rachis c. 130 m long. Large terminal "bulb" of male structures c. 20 cm long, bracts dark red, shining outside, with whitish bloom inside, 17-18 cm long. Male flowers in partial ring; perianth very irregular, upper segment c. 3 cm long, including terminal mucro, much inflated, pale pink, containing abundant sweet nectar. Lower segment c. 5 cm long, oblong, pinkish-purple above, terminal part yellow, recurving, 4-toothed. Female inflorescences towards base of stout rachis, each consisting of 10-12 bananas which curve upwards and in flattened "hands". Individual fruits 15-18 x 5-5.5 cm across the widest part, strongly and obusely 3-angled, medium green, eventually yellow; flesh very sweet (i.e. a typical banana). In the same small plot grew a banana identical except for the grey-glaucous skin when unripe. Both forms common on Penrhyn as well as Rarotonga, and local name is the same. The commonest banana on Penrhyn; local name "Taruia Sinasina", Rarotongan name "Taruia Maraina".
