Tree 7-8 m high, mostly higher. Trunk annular-ringed. Foliage in terminal crowns; leaves many metres long, arching downwards; pinnae numerous, coriaceous, shining green especially above. Midrib cream. Inflorescence cream, including perianth and young fruits. Flowers fragrant. Specimen represents a typical Penrhyn coconut. Other forms are present but on motus such as Atutahi, the form represented by this colletion is dominant or perhaps the only one present. Usually 15-20 m high. Cymba inflorescence sheath 50-55 x 9.5-10.5 cm, ± elliptic, hard. perianth segments firm, but soon recurving, 8-9 mm x 3-4 mm, lanceolate, the flower soon falling. Young fruits cream. Mature nuts 35-40 cm usually x 20-25 cm, ± ovoid-oblong with shallow rounded ribs, green until maturity; husks thick and fibrous. Liquid inside at this stage = "nu" stage, sweet and eminently potable.
