Notes:
Herbs with spreading or sprawling habit; stems lax and weak, erect only in uppermost part; rhizomes present although plants no more than short-lived perennials. Flowers of very variable size, held ± verically, from 2 to at least 5 flowers narrower in proportion to total length than the larger flowered plants ; lateral petals from c. 8 - 25 mm long; flowers mostly deep purple, especially in small flowered plants ; lower petal paler except for dark nectary lines, otherwise flowers all yellow or cream except for dark lines, sometimes upper 2 petals mostly purple and lower ones cream or yellow. Very common and has not been deliberately planted for some years.
