Rhododendron `Sir Robert Peel'. Round-headed tree c. 6m high with 3 large stout trunks and reddish-brown bark. Leaves mostly in terminal clusters green beneath. Inflorescence compact; perulae fawn. Flowers +/- erect. Calyx whitish. Corolla c.4cm long, not opening widely; slightly irregular, rose, lobes with central rib extending to base, larger posterior lobe with dark purple spots. Stamens 2.5-3.5cm (i.e. varying lenths); filaments white. Style c.4cm long, rose at apex and stigma dark. A very common cultivar in Christchurch.
