In the perichaetial stems I have examined most carefully, the perichaetia-bearing branches arise by lateral branching. I have not made a longitudinal section of a branch base.
I have seen the primary stems clearly in this specimen. I have removed most of the rhizoids and from primary stems which are connected to fruiting stems. They bear small leaves (cl. 0.5 mm) and have lateral branches only.
