Male. Stock ex Kew, in 1937, via North Canterbury Catchment Board. Shrub c. 3m. Stems grey. shoots dark green. Bud scales reddish-brown. Bracts black in upper 2/3rds c. 3mm, oblong-lanceolate. Gland c. 0.7mm, ± tubular.
Known in New Zealand as Salix "nigricans"
