Habitat:
Floodplain: on base of Kahikatea in damp silt.
Notes:
Not common in this site. One clump of D. media about 300m distant, 30m higher up slope. No intermediates seen. (D. caudata is quite common in this district - the Manganui R. catchment. It occurs almost exclusively on Kahikatea bases or beside fallen logs on slightly raised mounds on the floodplains: it appears to have a distinctly different niche from D. media, which occurs on clay banks well above the floodplain. Possible intermediates were seen only once: - in grazed underforest on the Okahu Stream.)
