Habitat:
On eroding clay bank; 1 m above water level of stream; margin of regenerating kauri forest (rough area with numerous introduced plants).
Notes:
Tubers present, pyriform, about 100 x 60 µ, cells not distinctly 2-rowed.I am not at all sure what this is (probably at least 2 species), but the best developed capsules are certainly not of Bryum sauteri. There are loose pyriform tubers in at least some of the soil. (A.J. Fife, March 1998).This is an aberrant and troublesome specimen. I doubt that the tubers (certainly derived from B. sauteri) present are connected to the gametophytes. I do not think it can be confidently named, and do not consider it worth prolonged study. A.J.
