Supplementary remarks:
These both [CHR 171749 & 159089] appear to be Metrosideros kermadecensis. I would doubt that [CHR] 171749 was growing naturally at Whangarei. M. Kermadensis is widely cultivated as the Kermadecs were the home of a New Zealand family last centuary the species could well have been brought into New Zealand and cultivated at an early date.
