Preferred name:
Hypopterygium didictyon Müll.Hal.
Division:
Bryophyta
Class:
Bryatae
Family:
Hypopterygiaceae
Vernacular name:
Allan Fife
Identification type:
Confirmation
Note:
I am unable to observe axillary hairs under the stereo in wet or dry condition. I have observed axillary hairs under the compound scope in this material [which was determined as H. didictyon by Kruijier]. The terminal cells are elongate, 5-7:1, and 63-75 µm [15 × 75 µm, 12 × 63, 9 × 63 µm, 9 × 66 µm, 12 × 72 µm, µm; x= 68 µm, n=5) They lack conspicuous surface deposits and appear nearly smooth under compound. I have stripped amphigastira and leaves from one side of an ultimate branch one at a time to observe these hairs under the compound. I have not stained.
