Specimen notes
Supplementary remarks:
About 40 years ago, W Reynolds & O Snell collected 8 pohutukawas off a clay cutting by the wharf at Parua Bay, Whangarei for planting in the Church of England grounds. All have grown well, 7 are normal pohutukawas, but the 8th one is small in stature, leaf and flower. Carmine rata is abundant in the area. The flowering times of M. excelsa and M. carminea don't usually coincide but is possible, eg. a tree of M. excelsa within the "bee" distance at Manganese Point flowers regularly in September. Specimen flowering.
