Supplementary remarks:
Sterile but archegonia present. In the stem that I have isolated in the petri dish, the archegonia terminate a short lateral branch, thus affirming the traditional interpretation that tthe female sex organs are "lateral" in this species [Pseudophascum ovalifolium]. The opposite (i.e. that the perichaetia are terminal and overtopped by a subperichaetial innovation) appears to be the norm in P. occidentale.
