Specimen notes
Public Note:
Ascomata with the dark wall, wide opening and white crystalline layer around the opening; consistently associated with dead and dying tissue, and could perhaps be parasitic on the liverworts.
P.R. Johnston
Public Note:
As I recall all the dying tissue associated with the Ostropalean belonged to the liverwort family Lepidoziaceae (two sp. of Lepidozia and one of Telaranea). By the haphazard pattern of dying off, and the association between the ascocarps and the dead patches I’d say, from a liverworts point of view, that the fungus is the most likely agent causing shoot death. I’ve certainly not seen that kind of pattern of within-patch die back before.

Public Note:
Associated bryophytes include Adelanthus falcatus, Heteroscyphus sinuosis, Lepidozia concinna, L. fugax, and Telaranea praenitens. [annotation slip in packet]
