Specimen notes
Public Note:
[Cooper] Unfortunately the holotype packet contains discordant elements. The larger frbody TR12610a is not the taxon described by Lebel. At the moment it remains unclear which element was sequenced by Lebel or ourselves. TR1210a: Cap SV-ve but with pink pigment and slight bluing with time (2/3). . 4-spored. Hymenium with a few refractive macrocystidia.Cap surface a disorganised (gelatinised?) cutis with numerous cystidial elements. Spores length=8.6–10.3µm (µ=9.4, σ=0.49), width=6.9–8.5µm (µ=7.6, σ=0.37), Q=1.2–1.4µm (µ=1.23, σ=0.05), n=20, ornamentation to 0.9um. The spores do not correspond to those described by Lebel. Details for rubroluteus sensu Lebel published = TR12610 details: Spore length=8.8–10.8µm (µ=9.7, σ=0.59), width=7.3–9.2µm (µ=8.1, σ=0.59), Q=1.1–1.3µm (µ=1.21, σ=0.08), n=20, ornamentation to 1.7um. Peridium pink in SV and with granules, except granules are red rather than violet, a disorganzed cutis. No cystidial elements in the peridium. Gill macrocystidia relatively rare, 4-spored. Neither of the elements in the packet shows any of red pigment indicated for fresh specimens. Note that Lebel's image of rubroluteus is the same photograph as that for tapawera but with color balance and contrast changed. Extract of email to Pat: I have come to the conclusion there are 5 responses to sulphovanillin and they are quite obvious and cluster together in our clades. 1) No reaction, no pigment changes. 2) Pink non-localised pigment formed which may or may not be accompanied by 3-5. 3) Slight blueing of small hyphal/cystidial elements (usually from a short trichoderm), and usually against pink reaction. 4) Strong blueing of small granules not obviously associated with any morphological feature visible in KOH/Melzers, and usually against a pink reaction.5) Blueing (weak/strong) of easily visible cystidial elements
