Public Note:
[Cooper] Peridium SV-ve but pink (against brown hyphae). Peridium with dark brown trichoderm arising from spherical cells. With occasional zebroid encrusted swollen hyphae. This is very distinctive and should place this close to Russula pleurogena and near R. griseobrunnea/horopito - except sequence places this in an isolated position. Hymenial cystidia, if present at all, are infrequent and basidiolar. Appears to be primarily 2-spored basidia but jumps in spore size indicates other numbers in addition. Larger spores length=9.6–11.7µm (µ=10.6, σ=0.85), width=8.9–10.9µm (µ=9.7, σ=0.75), Q=1.1–1.1µm (µ=1.09, σ=0.02), n=5. Smaller spores length=8.2–9.8µm (µ=9.0, σ=0.44), width=7.4–9.5µm (µ=8.6, σ=0.49), Q=1.0–1.2µm (µ=1.05, σ=0.06), n=20, ornamentation to 1.9um. Note that Lebel's image does not correspond to the holotype and Ross' images of the paratypes show a wide variation.
