Specimen notes
Public Note:
[McNabb:] #165, 238, 226, 219, 189, 167, 237, 166 (Holotype), 226, 237, 238 PILEUS: 8 cm diam., rather water-soaked but colours pinkish red, slightly greenish etc. GILLS: white, crowded, lamellulae absent. STIPE: pure white, 4cm long, more or less equal, 1-1.5cm diam., HABITAT: solitary under Nothofagus menziesii, Nelson, Karamea, Umere, 2.1.1969, Coll. R.F.R. McNabb & R.J. McNabb. Cuticle 150-200um thick, composed of hyaline, thin-walled, septate hyphae 2-5um diam., without coloured contents, terminal cells unspecialised, interwoven, +- obliquely ascending. Pilocystidia thin-walled, contents refractive in KOH, 3.5-6.5um diam., +- subclavate, apices +- bluntly acuminate, occasionally septate, to 100um long. Cuticle tending to become disorganised with age and partially gelatinised. Cuticle of stipe composed of interwoven repent hyaline, thin-walled, septate hyphae 2-5um diam., caulocystidia numerous, +- subclavate, contenst refratcive in KOH, similar to pilocystidia. Spores broadly elliptical, obliquely apiculate, apiculus to 1.5um long. 7.7-9.8 x 7-8.4um. Ornamentation moderately dense, of amyloid verrucae to 0.7um high, isolated or joined by fine amyloid ridges and forming a partial reticulum, plage distinct. Cheilocystidia sparse, similar to pleurocystidia but shorter. Basidia hyaline, clavate, 4-spored sterigmata to 5.5um long, 38-53 x 9.8-11.9um. Pleurocystidia scattered, relative numerous, projecting to 20um beyond basidii, hyaline thin-walled, contents rather sparse and not particularly refractive in KOH, +- fusiform or clavate to subclavate, apices bluntly acuminate, 49- 78 x 7.7 – 10.5um. [Ridley:] Basidiospores 7.25-9.25 x 6.25-7.25 um [7.5-10 x 7-85 um] Qm 1.24, broadly ellipsoid, Q 1.16-1.30, broadly ellipsoid, hyaline. Ornamented with moderately crowded, amyloid verrucae to 0.75 um high, single or in small confluent groups, joined by low, fine amyloid ridges forming a partial reticulum. Suprahilar plage distinct very slightly roughened and raised, very weakly amyloid c. 2.75 um wide. Hilar appendix obconical, oblique, to 2.25 um long. (Fig. 27f). Under the light microscope the plage was seen to be weakly amyloid. In the SEM it it appeared as a slightly raised are with a few central flakes. The ornamentation was type IIB. [Cooper:] DCYs visible in SV but not staining, SV-ve. purple granules present, like R. tawai. No fuchsinophile granules seen. Plage clear and with violet amyloid spot. Spores length=7.5–9.2µm (µ=8.2, σ=0.4), width=5.8–7.7µm (µ=6.5, σ=0.4), Q=1.1–1.4µm (µ=1.26, σ=0.07), n=20, ornamentation to 1um.
