Public Note:
[McNabb:] no 134 (group23). Typical of the species, reddish-purple stipe, purplish cap. habitat gregarious under Nothofagus menziesii, Nelson, Karamea, Umere, 5.1.1968. Coll. RF.R. McNabb. Pileus cuticle composed of hyaline, thin-walled or slightly thick-walled smooth septate hairs 3-5um diam., to 150um long, tapering apically, terminal cells unspecialised, arising from inflated celled hyphae. Sphaerocyst layer not apparent and no differentiated sphaerocysts seen. Pilocystidia absent. Stipe cuticle of hyaline septate thin walled parallel to interwoven hyphae 2.5-5um diam., terminal cells inconspicuous, aggregated into clumps. No caulocystidia. Basidia hyaline, clavate 4-spored stergigmata to 1.5um long, 30-43.5 x 10.5-15um. Pleurocystidia sparse, scattered, not or only slightly projecting beyond basidia, thin-walled, hyaline, contents refractive in KOH, broadly fusiform with acuminate, strangulated or capitulate apices 60-78 x 7.5-10.5um. Cheilocystidia sparse, +- strangulated or irregularly cylindrical to 5um diam., thin-walled not spectacular. Spores broadly elliptical to ovate obliquely apiculate, apiculus to 1.5(-2)um long. 9.8-12 x 7.5-9.8. Ornamentation of truncated verrucae to 1.5um high, joined in groups of 2-3, or joined by moderately fine amyloid ridges and a very incomplete reticulum formed. Plage present. Note that ornamentation is less dense than in R. macrocystidiata and R. 'caulocystidiata' [JAC = pilocystidiata?] [Ridley] Basidiospores 8-9.25 x 7-8 um, [9.5-12 x 8.5-10.5 um], Qm= 1.18, broadly ellipsoid, Q1.10-1.32, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, hyaline. Ornamented with moderately crowded, partially amyloid to amyloid, truncate spines to 1.75 um, mostly single or in small confluent groups, joined by low, fine, amyloid ridges, forming a partial reticulum. Suprahilar plage distinct amyloid, smooth, slightly raised c. 2.75 um wide. Hilar appendix obconical, oblique, 2(-2.75) um long. (Fig. 28a). The plage was distinct and amyloid; the ornamentation was type IIIB. [Cooper:] reddish purple stipe, purplish cap'. gill cystidia not seen. Cap hairs very obvious. Amyloid spot on spores very clear. Spines to 2um high. Spores length=7.4–10.3µm (µ=8.8, σ=0.6), width=6.7–7.7µm (µ=7.2, σ=0.3), Q=1.1–1.4µm (µ=1.2, σ=0.1), n=20. DCY not seen, SV-ve, fuchsinophile -ve. Ridley has 8-9.25 x 7-8, Q=1.18. The dried material has a dark magenta cap. Pat's 'cap colour fading on drying' is not a good character.
