Public Note:
[McNabb:] 139 (Holotype), 172, 173, 205, PDD26924, 155(group 38), 253, 255, 256, 257, 254. Large white when emerging from the soil, turns pallid yellowish brown with age. Gills white, unchanging, stipe white. C.f. appears same as Leptospermum sp. Habitat in pairs under Nothofagus fusca/menziesii, Nelson, Maruia, 6.5.1968, Coll. R.F.R. McNabb. Cuticle of pileus composed of interwoven +- repent to obliquely ascending hyphae, 3.5-6um diam., septate, brownish tints above superficial layer of hyphae. Terminal cells unspecialised, pilocystidia very sparse, +- cylindrical to fusiform 4-7um diam., of variable diam. Cuticle of stipe similar to that of pileus, of interwoven hyphae, terminal cells unspecialised, caulocystidia present. Pleurocystidia scaterred, numerous, projecting to 30um beyond basidia, +- broadly fusiform with acuminate, strangulated or capitulate apices or +- subclavate, thin-walled, with refractive contents in KOH, shorter near gill edge, 63-108 x 8.2-13.5um. Basidia hyaline clavate 4-spored, sterigmata to 8um long, 49-63 x 10.5-13.5um. Cheilocystidia reprsented by short pleurocystidia crowded on gill edge. Spores +- subglobose to broad-ovate, obliquely apiculate, apiculus to 2um long, 10.5-12.5 x 9-11 um. Ornamentation of truncated verrucae -2um high, isolated confluent or joined by very fine to coarse amyloid ridges and forming an incomplete reticulum. Plage not distinctive. [Ridley:] Basidiospores 8-9.25 (-10.5) x 7.2-8.5(-9) um, [10-12.5 x 9-11 um] Qm 1.12, subglobose, Q 1.06-1.20, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid hyaline. Ornamented with sparse to moderately crowded, partially inamyloid to amyloid, acute verrucae and crests, to 1.25 um, occasionally isolated, but mostly confluent in small groups joined by moderately fine, low, amyloid ridge+ forming a partial reticulum. Suprahilar plage distinct strongly amyloid, finely roughened, c. 2.75 um wide. Hilar appendix obconical oblique, 2-2.75 um long. (Fig. 25a). The plage was originally described as indistinct, however in this study it was observed to be very distinct and amyloid. The ornamentation was type IIIB [Cooper:] dried gills are orange. DCY present but SV+ve weak and very sparse - need to search various patches (possibly subcutaneous?). Spore ornamentation prominent and to 2um high. Without plage but often with strong amyloid encrusted spot (black, not red). A number of spores on gill are smooth. Spores (from gill) length=8.0–9.8µm (µ=8.9, σ=0.5), width=6.4–10.3µm (µ=7.8, σ=0.8), Q=0.9–1.3µm (µ=1.1, σ=0.1), n=20. DCY SV-ve (unlike current description). Fuchsinophile hyphae absent. Ridley has 8-9.25(-10.5) x 7.25-8.5(-9), Q=1.12. Observation of strong amyloid plage confirmed. McNabb's notes indicate lamellulae are frequent but the character is inconsistent across the described paratypes. There are no detailed notes for collection 139 and the herbarium specimen indicates lamellulae might be present, but aren't obvious. The cap hyphae appear nodulose, perhaps could be described as bosseles (see JAC10732). The character requires further observations. There are occasional cap cystidia, mostly long, not acuminate.
