Specimen notes
Public Note:
[McNabb] holotype = #182, +217, 220, 192, 195, 217, 220. Pileus 5-6cm diam., infundibuliform, smooth, viscid, margins non-pectinate, white to off white with faint reddish grey to purplish grey tints in extreme centre. Gills white, not discoloured, simple or occasionally forked near stipe, lamellulae sparse, not in sequence, to 5mm deep. Stipe 4.5-6cm diam., expanded basally to 1.8cm diam., c 1.2cm diam., apically, smooth, dry, solid, pure white, innately stretched-reticulate; flesh white unchanging. Context of pileus, white unchanging. Taste context and gills mild. Chemical characters formalin n.r., phenol slowly deep vinaceous, FeSO4 salmon pink immediately, guiacol n.r., KOH on pileus bleaching, leaving areas congo-red when tried on pigmented centre, no reaction on white areas, on context faintly yellowing, NH4OH on pileus and context no reaction. Habitat solitary under Nothofagus menziessi, Nelson, Lake Daniels Track, 14.5.1969, Coll. R.F.R. McNabb. Cuticle composed of +- erect or occasionally ascending hyaline, thin-walled, septate hyphae, not arising from sphaerocysts, becoming disorganised and gelatinised with age. Terminal cells unspecialised, 3-5um diam. pilocystidia absent. Spores broadly elliptical obliquely apiculate to 1.5(-2) um long. 9.8 – 11.2 x 9.1 – 10.5um. Ornamentation moderately dense, of amyloid or partially inamyloid truncated spines to 1.5um high, isolated in small groups, or joined by very fine ridges, plage distinct. Basidia clavate, 4-spored, sterigmata to 8.5um long, 42-66 x 10.5 -14um. Pleurocystidia numerous scattered, projecting to 20-um thick walled in middle to thinner at either end, tinted, contents sparse, subclavate to fusiform or irregularly fusiform 45-73 x 9.1 – 12.6um. Cheilocystidia crowded on gill edge, similar to pleurocystidia but shorter. Cuticle of stipe composed of interwoven repent, hyaline, septate hyphae, terminal cells unspecialised, often projecting in clumps. caulocystidia absent. [Ridley:] Basidiospores 8-10.5 x 7-9.25 um, [9-12 x 8.5-10.5um] Qm 1.13, subglobose, Q1.06-1.16, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, hyaline. Ornamented with moderately crowded, partially amyloid to amyloid, truncate spines 1.75 um long, single or in confluent groups of two or three, joined by very fine, amyloid ridges, or isolated, forming a partial reticulum. Suprahilar plage distinct, flaking, amyloid, c, 3.25 um wide. Hilar appendix obconical, oblique, to 3 um long. (Fig. 27d).The plage was conspicuous, particularly because of its size and its weak amyloid reaction. The ornamentation was type IIIB, approaching type IV. [Cooper:] No spore print. The stems of the dried material are dark brown, which seems unusual considering how pale they start, and same as R. roseopileata but not noticed on any other collection. SV-ve. Cap with relatively few refractive small cystidia, like cheilocystidia. Not seen such a distinction between pleuro/cheilo in any other collection. Only a few macroscytidia are thick-walled. Spores with plage and broad amyloid violet spot. Spores length=8.1–9.7µm (µ=8.8, σ=0.5), width=7.1–8.5µm (µ=7.8, σ=0.4), Q=1.1–1.3µm (µ=1.13, σ=0.05), n=20, ornamentation to 1.8um. Sequence data says this is near to R. subtilis & peckii, in Singers Section Rigidae, subsection Lilaceinae which has blue cap granules in SV and primordial hyphae.
