Public Note:
[McNabb:] Group 2, #37, =#4(Holotype), #16 (pdd26630), #60?(pdd26944), #100(pdd26610), #9(26623), #66(26589), 48 (same as 1,11), #11(26625), #1(26616), #244, #315(29396), #316(29397). PILEUS: 3.5-5cm diam., convex at first, becoming infundibuliform, not xxxx, fleshy, rather sticky and viscid, xxx in centre, velar remnants present, areolate, (c12D4) purple, firmly mucilaginous, and xxx rather radially fibrillose. Background colour (C4 F3) dark brown, sepia, without the pronounced greenish tinge in centre, paling to 4D4 - E4 at margins, margins distinctly radially grooved and ridged for up to 1cm from edge, ridges rounder, broader than grooves, margins very thin, almost transparent. GILLS: crowded, white at first, becoming rather sordid white to a pallid creamy white, spotted and stained with small dull rusty brown patches on edges of gills. Lamellae simple or more frequently forked close to the stipe, not forked at margins, lamellulae are present but not in any particular sequence, rather thick, brittle, free to adnate rather than decurrent. STIPE: 3-3.5cm long +- equal, 1-1.2 cm diam., hollow at maturity, annulus absent, no indications of velar remnants, very faintly longit. fibrillose to stretched-reticulated, sordid white to pallid greyish pink, not distinctly felted under the lens. Flesh white, mycelium at extreme base of stipe purple, same as velar remnants. CONTEXT OF PILEUS: dull greyish-brown, unchanging. SMELL: not noted. TASTE: not distinctive context and gills. SPORE PRINT: Crawshay (B-C). CHEMICAL REACTIONS: Formalin/Phenol on context, no reaction, but a distinct reddish-purple colour in middle of pileus, from either chemical or mixture of the two. FeSO4 on context - faint salmon colour immediately. KOH on pileus - no reaction. KOH on context no reaction. NH4OH on pileus - no reaction, on context - no reaction. HABITAT: gregarious under Leptospermum scoparium/ericoides, Auckland, Titirangi, Bishop's Reserve, 6/2/1967. R.F.R. McNabb. Cuticle very heavily gelatinised, composed of interwoven, repent or obliquely ascending hyphae, hyaline thin-walled, +- even diam., septate, 1.5 – 4.5um diam., terminal cells unspecialised. Pilocystidia absent. Cuticle on stipe composed of hyaline interwoven hyphae 4.5-7.5um diam., septate, terminal cells projecting in clumps, tapering apically, Cuticle of pileus where velar remnants present quite different, ascending heavily gelatinised hyphae are relatively short celled and inflated apically and give rise to +- equal diam., thin-walled, smooth, septate hairs to 200um long, 2.5-5um diam., forming a tangle. Spores broadly elliptical, obliquely apiculate, apiculus to 1.5(-2)um diam., 7.3-9.8 x 6.3 – 8.4um. Ornamentation of amyloid truncated verrucae, moderately dense, to 0.7u high, isolated, in confluent groups, or joined by moderately fine amyloid ridges forming a very incomplete reticulum. Cheilcosytidia seen on gill edge occasionally, similar to pleurocystidia, oleiferous hyphae absent. Basidia +- clavate, 4-spored sterigmata to 6um long, 39-48 x 7.7 -9.8um. Pleurocystidia scattered, sparse, projecting to 15um , +- fusiform with strangulate or capitate apices, thin-walled, contents sparse, 52-73 x 7.7 – 9.8um [Ridley:] Basidiospores 7.5-8.5 x 6.25-7 um, [7.5-10 x 6.5-8.5 um] Qm = 1.22, broadly ellipsoid, Q 1.14-1.30, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, hyaline. Ornamented with crowded, acute, amyloid verrucae and crests, to 1.25 um occasionally isolated, although usually confluent in small groups, joined by moderately fine to coarse, low, amyloid ridges forming a partial reticulum. Suprahilar plage distinct, inamyloid to very weakly amyloid, finely roughened, c. 2.75 um wide. Hilar appendix obconical, oblique, 1.25 um tong. (Fig. 25b). Originally described as absent this study observed the plage to be quite distinct both under the light microscope and SEM. It usually appeared inamyloid, but in a few basidiospores it appeared very faintly grey (amyloid?). The ornamentation was type IIIB. [Cooper:] SV+ve - weakly, initially thought to be negative, but cap tissue from the edge shows them. No lamellulae, with basal interveining. The areolate patches described for the cap are not obvious. A squash in KOH shows septate hairs, some thin elements (but subcuticular?) and refractive cystidia of various shapes. No spore print. Spores with plage. Spores length=6.8–8.2µm (µ=7.7, σ=0.3), width=5.4–6.6µm (µ=6.1, σ=0.3), Q=1.1–1.4µm (µ=1.26, σ=0.06), n=20, ornamentation to 1um.
